Lake Turkana also is known as the Jade Sea famous for its greenish-blue colors, hence the nickname the Jade Sea and It is the largest alkaline lake in the world.
The Lake is 300 km long and 50 Km wide, which also makes it the largest permanent desert lake in the World.
DAY 1: Sunday 9th August
NAIROBI TO MARSABIT
Depart from Nairobi city to Marsabit town in an overland track, have a stopover in Nanyuki town for early lunch, drive to Mt Ololokwe and have an amazing and memorable photo session before proceeding to Marsabit County for sunset dinner and rest.
DAY 2: Monday 10th August
MARSABIT TO NORTH HORR VIA CHELBI DESERT
Early departure to Marsabit National Park after healthy breakfast, the park is home to several beautiful crater lakes namely
- Paradise Lake
- Gof Sokorte Dika Lake
- Elephant pool
With its beautiful Crater lakes rimmed by jungle, the National park is a wildlife sanctuary, a wide selection of species such as buffaloes, rhino and the massive forest elephants of Marsabit. From the National park, we begin the journey of crossing part of Chalbi desert on our way to North Horr.
The Chalbi Desert a 100,000 square kilometer area that is aptly named in the native language of the Gabra people as “salty and bare. The desert was once part of an extensive lake, as evidenced by the basin that fills with shallow water during heavy rain. When you journey into the Chalbi Desert, prepare yourself for an eerie landscape edged by rocky lava flows and cracked earth.
After a long day drive in the desert, we shall arrive in North Horr late afternoon, checking in the hotel and have an evening warm Aqua therapy.
DAY 3: Tuesday 11th August
NORTH HORR TO LAKE TURKANA
After spending a night in North Horr, we begin our final desert road trip to Loiyangalani –the Jade Sea. The road gets sweeter with Chalbi desert sand dunes. The drive to Loiyangalani from North Horr takes approximately two hours.
The team will check-in, have early lunch and rest. In the afternoon the team shall visit the El-Molo tribe.
El Molo is a tribe that lives along the shores of Lake Turkana on the south-eastern side of the lake. They are the smallest community in Kenya with a population of about 300 people. The name of this tribe (El Molo) originated from a phrase of Maasai community meaning “those who make a living from other sources other than cattle”.
At night the guest shall enjoy cultural and traditional dance from the El-Molo communities on request.
DAY 4: Wednesday 12th August
TOUR TO SOUTHERN ISLAND NATIONAL PARK
We start our day with a buffet healthy breakfast before riding to Southern Island National Park by speed boat. The South Island National Park is home to crocodiles, hippos as well as the fish breading points. Hike to the viewpoint in the park and from here enjoy amazing sceneries of the crater lakes inside the island. From the island, we boat ride back to the shores for a romantic sunset walk.
DAY 5: Thursday 13th August
TOUR DESERT MUSEUM & DRIVE TO SAMBURU
After Early morning breakfast, we drive to the desert Museum on the shores of Lake Jade as we officially exit Turkana County. The morning drive will lead us to a desert museum where we will learn about unique cultures of indigenous tribes of the Turkana Region, also see some artifacts including traditional items focusing on weapons and hunting tools used by these communities. From the museum, we drive to Ngurunit village in Samburu County.
The road tour to Ngurunit is another unique adventure; the road passes through the giant northern wind power in Turkana County.
DAY 6: Friday 14th August
SAMBURU TO NAIROBI
We begin our morning with a nature walk on the Ndoto hills and swimming in Ngurunit River, have breakfast and benediction. From Ngurunit we drive back to Nairobi with a stopover in Nanyuki town for lunch and rest. The team shall arrive in Nairobi late in the evening.
